How cute is this Hello Kitty cake! I covered the cake in marshmallow fondant - a recipe from About.com's website. I always hear that fondant is really hard to work with, but this marshmallow stuff is super easy if you ask me? The bonus is - it doesn't taste nasty like regular fondant. It's not as yummy as butter cream, but totally edible! The bow and nose are made of fondant as well. The eyes and whiskers were added with gel from a tube so the eyes look a little weird in this pic. I don't really like gel but was in a pinch for solid black decorations. I have a problem with the gel stuff 'running', so we'll see what it does to the white fondant overnight in the fridge.
I stacked two round cakes for the face, then sliced off a sliver at the top and bottom to make an oval. The ears are rice krispy treats, pre-purchased of course, I burn them every time I try to make them from scratch.
